About the Arizona state flower, Saguaro Cactus Blossom (Cereus giganteus), and its adoption. The saguaro cactus seems to have made its first foray into Arizona officialdom on an 1864 version of the Territorial Seal. The saguaro blossom was officially adopted as the Arizona State flower on March 16, 1931. The act says:

The state's name comes from arizonac, from two Papago Indian words meaning "place of the young spring." Arizona has a very dry climate and is known for its cactus plants. In fact, the state flower is the saguaro cactus blossom.
