Britain's policy of salutary neglect permitted the colonist to create many legislative assemblies which were independent from British decree. In 1619, the House of Burgesses was created. This was the first of many small independent governments to come.

The 1763 Treaty of Paris ceded all French lands to Britain, and decided the colonial fate of the continent. Shortly after the end of the war, the British government dropped its policy of salutary neglect and attempted to gain tighter control over its holdings in North America.

Prior to the war, Great Britain had practiced a policy of salutary neglect, not insisting on strict enforcement of laws, such as the Molasses Act, which in 1733 imposed a tax on molasses, because trade with the American colonies was making Britain very wealthy and powerful.

Nevertheless, the Seven Years' War fostered resentment in the American colonists toward the British and contempt in Britain toward the Americans. These tensions caused England to abandon its policy of salutary neglect, which led directly to the American Revolution.
