A writer imagines a story to be happening in a place that is rooted in his or her mind. The location of a story's actions, along with the time in which it occurs, is the setting.

Setting is the time and place in which a story occurs. A setting of a story, poem, or play can be anchored to a specific time and place, such as on the Oregon Trail in the 1800s, or it can be fictitious, such as a faraway kingdom or in outer space.
