My Question regards sawdust firing in a steel trash can. I Fired yesterday for the first time in a 40 gallon(or 30?) trash can and I got a slight varience in blacks/greys. I was only using straw/dung/sawdust so I believe that with other materials, or which I have a list, I can get more color.

I have been bisque firing my pots before pit firing (or firing in my sawdust kiln) so the organics are mainly for decorative purposes. ... Sawdust firing is something else, and I need to retain the same effects of burnished pieces, but fired to a higher temperature for a more permanent situation. Suggestions?

This first picture is of yours truly inspecting the results of a sawdust firing. I love this old oil drum. It had produced some awesome pots! Notice the pieces of broken kiln shelf below the barrel. Those are there to lift the barrel off the ground to keep it from scorching the blacktop beneath.

12 SAWDUST FIRING IN A METAL CAN (Greenware or bisque ware) Fire in good weather only. Follow all Fairfax County outdoor firing procedures. Fire in a secured (fenced) area. Notify the night custodian if it is necessary to maintain the firing overnight.

In sawdust firing the piece is packed in a kiln structure surrounded by sawdust. The sawdust is set alight and allowed to burn until combustion ceases from lack of fuel. As the sawdust burns, rich patterns of carbon smudging are left on the surface of the piece.
