From 1939 to 1943, 185 refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe found safe haven at Scattergood Hostel, a refugee center run by Quaker farmers and college students in what had been an abandoned Friends boarding school in Iowa.

This trip to Scattergood was a truly wonderful experience; while my mother checked out the classes, I got to know some of the students who are now friends and roommates. After going home and getting back into that mind-numbing routine of public school I realized that I wanted to actually attend Scattergood.
