To generalize, this set of Schubert's best chamber music (no "Death and the Maiden" Quartet, though!) ... Instead, it presents the listener with the sensation that this work is being created anew. There's little classicism here; Schubert is portrayed as a heaven-storming Romantic in a reading that thunders and sulks.

This is a brilliant collection: excellent performances of not only "The Rosamunde" Quartet that I covered in the talk, but also of the "Death and the Maiden" Quartet and the monumental String Quintet in C major, for many Schubert's greatest chamber work.

One of my very favorite chamber music pieces of all is Schubert's Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano in A Minor. I first discovered this work when it was used as the background score for a French telefilm of de Maupassant's short story, "Le Père Amable." Well I tell you, they don't write film scores like that anymore!
