In the UK, the pine marten is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, and it cannot be trapped, disturbed or sold without a specific licence from the relevant government conservation agency - in Scotland this is Scottish Natural Heritage.

Recent studies show that the pine marten in Scotland appears to be making a good recovery. South of the Scottish border the situation appears to be different and the recovery taking place in Scotland has not yet occurred in those parts of England and Wales where pine martens survived.

Pine martens will always be thinly distributed, in the same way that rare birds are distributed, so it is unlikely that they would encounter each other. There are more rare birds in the Scottish Highlands, where the pine marten is well established, than there are in England.

Found throughout most of central and northern Europe (4). In the UK it is restricted to the Scottish Highlands and Grampian, and a few populations occur in southern Scotland. The pine marten is extinct throughout most of England and Wales (2) with a few scattered records in the north and in Wales (5).
