BACKGROUND INFORMATION; Before performing this activity, students should be familiar with: 1) types of boundaries between lithospheric plates; 2) features of the ocean floor; 3) the concept of sea-floor spreading;

Sea-floor spreading is the process in which the ocean floor is extended when two plates move apart. As the plates move apart, the rocks break and form a crack between the plates. Earthquakes occur along the plate boundary.

Seafloor spreading - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seafloor spreading occurs at mid-ocean ridges, where new oceanic crust is formed through volcanic activity and then gradually moves away from the ridge. Seafloor spreading helps explain continental d...

Sea-floor spreading along the midoceanic ridge. ... Sea-floor spreading occurs where oceanic plates are diverging from one another. Magma rises along a rift zone and spreads out at the surface building new sea floor. As a result, the age of the rocks increases as one moves away from the rift zone.
