If you are laying vinyl on quarries you will need to smooth the floor with a self leveling floor compound (see below). I agree about the leveling compound - particularly the weight ! I would use plywood sheets to fill in the biggest voids & then feather into the plywood with leveling compound. Possibly grind off the high spots with a floor drum sander.
