The fifth layer in the OSI Reference Model is the session layer. As we proceed up the OSI layer stack from the bottom, the session layer is the first one where pretty much all practical matters related to the addressing, packaging and delivery of data are left behind—they are functions of layers four and below.

The session layer resides above the transport layer, and provides ``value added'' services to the underlying transport layer services. ... It is the thinnest layer in the OSI model. At the time the model was formulated, it was not clear that a session layer was needed.

The Session Layer, also known as Layer 5, is one of the end-to-end layers of the OSI Reference Model. It adds value-added services (i.e., the sessions) to the Transport Layer’s error-free, end-to-end, message-oriented service and, in the model, provides services to the Presentation Layer.
