The real strength of an egg lies in its shape. A side on blow from a sharp object puts pressure across the thin shell and easily breaks it. But squeezing directs pressure into the egg so that it compresses along, not across the shell.

Aristotle once suggested that males came from more pointed eggs and females from more rounded eggs. This of course, is not true. The shape of an eggshell does affect its physical properties, however. The general spherical shape of an egg maximizes shell strength while also conserving shell materials.

Did it break? If you did this correctly the egg did not break. Why? Due to the shape of the egg and the strength of the shell weight is distributed evenly around the egg and you are squeezing around the full base of the egg.

Having said this, there are a variety of ways to approximate the shape of a hen's egg by modifying the equation of an ellipsoid, x2/a2 + y2/b2 + z2 ... Why is a hen's, or other bird's, egg shaped as it is? Because it gives strength even though the eggshell is thin enough to allow the young bird to peck its way out when ready.
