Hydrologic conditions, including lack of rainfall, lowered water levels, or conversely, excessive rainfall in a short period of time (especially after a drought) can all contribute to sinkhole development. New construction, new roads, and any diversion of water flow are also common culprits.

The essential factor of all sinkhole development is the dissolving of the underlying limestone by slightly acidic water. As rain falls through the atmosphere, it absorbs carbon dioxide and forms a weak carbonic acid.

A relatively low potential exists, however, for dissolution to cause sinkhole collapse followed by catastrophic lake drainage because of low vertical and lateral hydraulic gradients.

The expansion of urban areas to the west has increased the pressure on the area for residential development, while the heavily quarried nature of the outcrop and its proximity to large urban centers make the region attractive for waste disposal by landfill.
