The nucleus  of the atom  has a diameter of about meter, whereas the atomic diameter is ... Imagine the nucleus to be the size of a golf ball. Then on this scale the first electron shell would be about one kilometer from the golf ball, the second shell about four kilometers, the third nine kilometers and so on.

Another example of the relative size of an atom was demonstrated with olive oil. A quarter teaspoon of olive oil was poured on a small pond. After 8 minutes the olive oil spread about 200 square yards. That’s about 1/5,000,000th of an inch thick.

An atom is very very small. If you were to take a pure element and cut it up to thousands of pieces until you couldn't cut it up anymore, that would be the size of an atom.

Question: I am trying to help my students visualize the size of an atom and relate it to things they know. Do you have some examples I could give them that might help? I have one: the atom could be the size of St. Peter's Basilica in Roma and the nucleus a grain of sand.

What carries more kinetic energy than a Randy Johnson fastball, yet is only the size of an atom? ... Remember, all that energy comes from just one atomic-size particle. Seeing how there are as many atoms in a baseball as there are baseballs that could fill the moon, that's one powerful pitch. These particles are so fast,

If you can cut the strip of paper in half 31 times you will end up with a piece of paper the size of an atom ... Is there anything smaller? Yes, the size of an atom nucleus would take about 41 cuts! Scientists use advanced technology to explore the world of electrons and quarks that are at least 9,000 times smaller than...
