DEAR TIM: My daughter purchased an older home with plaster walls. There are numerous cracks in the walls and ceiling. The plaster appears to be sound. Should she skim over the existing plaster? Will the cracks reappear?

The walls have small to medium-sized areas where some of the plaster is missing and there are numerous jagged cracks in the walls. In some areas I can see down to a rough, sandy brown-colored plaster. Do you think we can repair these defects on our own using skim coat plaster or other tools?

PLASTER walls frequently develop a network of hairline cracks that are too narrow to be filled with patching plaster, yet they cannot be covered with paint. The best way to restore the wall surface is by skim-coating it.

skim coat plaster does not equal skim coating with joint compound. plaster is much more difficult to work with. If you have plaster walls, you can't cover them with joint compound. If you have gypsum board walls ("drywall"), you can use joint compound and it's pretty easy.

i have repairs to make to old plaster walls. some places were ... Am I correct in my understanding of the above, that adding bonding agent will interfere with the ability of moisture/vapor to "transpire" through the wall, and you recommend removing the paint (down to old plaster), and then skim coating plaster over that?

Hi all, I recently moved into a house, built in 1897, with primarily wall-papered plaster walls. The plaster (on wood lathe) was apparently meant to be papered (not painted) as it is not very smooth. From the look of it, sand was mixed into the plaster. ... Re: Plaster skim coating - advice needed...
