Slaves also recognized the paradox of living in a country busy promoting fundamental rights while simultaneously holding blacks in bondage. Many of them used this moment of uncertainty to secure freedom. When the British forces called upon slaves to join their ranks and promised them freedom in return, black men enlisted.

Robert Smalls grew up as a slave in this house owned by his master, Mr. McKee. After the war, Smalls returned to South Carolina having achieved not only freedom, but also respect and notoriety. Smalls bought the McKee House and put his mother, Lydia, in charge of the property.
