Attenuation is the opposite of amplification, and is normal when a signal is sent from one point to another. If the signal attenuates too much, it becomes unintelligible, which is why most networks require repeaters at regular intervals.

Soft tissue attenuation is one of the more common causes of rMPI artifact. The heart is surrounded by tissues of varying densities (eg, bone, lungs, and breast). Radionuclide imaging of the thorax results in nonuniform myocardial photon activity due to these intervening structures.

We describe a case of diffuse superior and middle mediastinal enlargement of soft tissue attenuation noted on helical computed tomography (CT) of a patient with clinical and radiographic findings of congestive heart failure (CHF). ... The Medscape Journal ... Allergy & Clinical Immunology...

Liposarcoma, Soft Tissue; Synovial Sarcoma; ... MFH accounts for 20-24% of soft-tissue sarcomas, making it the most common soft-tissue sarcoma occurring in late adult life. ... Fat attenuation is not observed in the tumors; this fact can be useful in distinguishing MFH from some well-differentiated liposarcomas.

The attenuation of photons by the breasts and other soft tissue overlying the chest may decrease the diagnostic accuracy of SPECT myocardial imaging. In this experiment, we measured the attenuation distortion of myocardial polar maps using a thorax phantom with a cardiac insert and added breast tissue.

Non-attenuation-corrected images show a large, severe, fixed inferior wall defect extending into the apex (shown by arrows), and a medium, moderate severity, ... This results in an attenuation artifact whose extent varies with location of soft tissue, overall patient body size, and depth of target organ (heart).
