During the Stamp Act of 1765, while the American Colonies were under the rule of the British Crown, a group of Patriots were organized under the name The Sons of Liberty to protest the Stamp tax. The Sons of Liberty were the first formal group organized in the Colonies.

As that group grew, it came to be known as the Sons of Liberty. And grow it did! These were not the leading men of Boston, but rather workers and tradesmen. It was unseemly that they would be so agitated by a parliamentary act.
