Southern lubber grasshopper, Romalea guttata (Houttuyn) (Plate 4). This large, flightless grasshopper is perhaps the best-known grasshopper in Florida. Frequently observed crossing highways and invading yards, it sometimes damages certain plants, especially ornamental plants and vegetables.

Eastern lubber grasshopper is found throughout the state, and is also common in other southeastern states. There is but a single generation annually, but either nymphs or adults are present throughout most of the year in the southern portions of Florida, and all except the coldest months in northern Florida.

The eastern lubber grasshopper is limited to the southeastern and south central portion of the United States. The northern boundary is central North Carolina west through southern Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, to Texas.

Now relatively dry at the end of an almost rainless Floridian winter, the ground here was jumping with Romalea microptera, the southern lubber grasshopper (Orthoptera: Caelifera: Romaleidae).
