Another way for a moth to confuse its predators is for its camouflage to blend it in with its environment. The Rustic Sphinx, Manduca rustica, at the right is clearly visible to us, but just imagine how hard it would be to see it if it were quietly perched on a brown tree trunk thickly covered with gray lichen!

The Walnut Sphinx Moth will rarely be seen flying during the day. Its strange way of holding its wings helps to camouflage it while it rests, making it look more like dead leaves or wood flakes than a large and juicy moth.

Here a moth which tried today to hide itself on the fabric of a chair in my office. Need some help in ID of this moth. Wingspan is about 4". My two family guesses are Sphingidae or Cossidae. I first thought that it might be a Carolina Sphinx but the bands on the sides of the body on this one are white not yellow.
