IT IS highly unlikely that James Hargreaves had anything to do with the invention of the spinning jenny - despite what the history books say. The Lancashire weaver got the credit for the ingenious device simply because unscrupulous industrialist Sir Richard Arkwright found it politically expedient to give it to him.

The Spinning jenny produced thread quickly. This enabled spinners to keep up with the demands of weavers who were using mechanical looms. Early models allowed a spinner to work with eight spindles at a time. Later models allowed the spinner to manipulate up to one hundred spindles at a time.
