The spotted ratfish was originally described as Chimaera colliei by Lay & Bennett in 1839. This name was later changed to the currently valid Hydrolagus colliei (Lay & Bennett 1839-). The genus name, Hydrolagus, is derived from the Greek "hydr" meaning water and "lagos" meaning hare.
