The habitat of a squirrel monkey is in the northern part of South America to Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil. There are squirrel monkeys also in Costa Rica and Panama in Central America. The monkey lives in parts of virgin and secondary forests and in cultivated areas, usually along rivers and streams.

Even though there are slight morphological differences among squirrel monkey species, all have the same general facial and body colorations and are easily distinguished as part of the genus. Squirrel monkeys have white masks of fur around their eyes and dark brown or black coloration around the mouth and chin.

The Central American squirrel monkey weighs up to about 1 kg (2.2 lb). It is found in primary and secondary forests and cultivated areas. Disturbed habitats are advantageous because of their greater supply of preferred food - insects (such as grasshoppers) and fruit.
