If a starling gets to a good spot first, they easily defend it ... European Starlings do good and bad for people. They eat lots of insects which helps control pests. Also, many people think they are pretty birds to look at, and they don't mind being around humans. Starlings can be pests themselves, though, eating crops.

The good that most people see in birds is sometimes offset by the bad that birds do under certain situations. The ugly part comes in when misdirected emotionalism ... Man relates to freedom exemplified by birds, and it would be a drearier world without their presence. In cities birds offer humans contact with nature.

The European Starling in America ... The future of the purple martin likely depends, not on the number of martin houses, but, rather on the ratio of good to bad martin landlords. Since purple martins in the East are totally dependent on housing offered by humans, they have few alternatives to substandard housing.

My distaste similarly applies to Sturnus vulgaris, now called the Common Starling; I think the European descriptor serves as a perfect reminder of ... All in all, the recommendations of the International Ornithological Congress do a lot more good than bad in the effort to standardize English common names for birds.
