[Archive] starter motor wont engage flywheel Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines ... does anyone know if i only need, if i can get, the parts that engage the starter to the flywheel ? or must i replace the starter ? also, is there an easy way for me to replace the starter rope ? without getting killed i mean.

The problem I am having is when the ignition switch is turn to the start position, I hear the starter solenoid engage but the starter motor will not turn over. I have replace the battery and the starter and still have the same problem.

is it possible that the starter or sylinoid was bad before the attemped jumpstart? Jump the terminals on the starter solenoid, if it cranks over and starts then the problem is wire related (grounded, disconected, torched) if it ... Auto Parts and Repairs question: If the starter will sometimes engage and sometimes just spin when you turn the key is this a sign of a defective starter? This sounds like there are some teeth missing ... ATV starter turns but does not engage? Starter starts sometimes and spins others?

There appeared to be no power going to the starter. When I got the key to the start position, the security light flashed and the radio antenna went down. There was no battery drain. I tried jumping the car with the same result.

I tried this and the starter would not operate at all. I am only mentioning this point because it seems as odd to me as the starter malfunction. The snow thrower is garaged and dry before several attempts have been made to get the starter to engage with the engine.

I have a starter that doesn't want to engage completely on my '81 1100 after it has been riden and at normal operating temperature. Sometimes it takes two to three tries to engage the starter and I usually always get a knock when i start her cold or hot.

I had the same problem from day one, finally the starter blew up and would not engage at all. Put a call into Honda and brought it in to the dealer. They ended up replacing the whole starter, gears, clutch and the battery . Starts like a champ now, cold, hot does not matter.
