The solution: a large steel I-beam. A steel beam is great because it offers a lot more load-bearing capability without the increased height you would need in a wooden beam of similar strength. And that means less intrusion into the space we're trying ... The second number indicates the beam has a weight 82 pounds per foot.

In your case I should have probably added more because your 5 PSF dead load only includes the actual ceiling and framing materials. However, the weight of the beam itself is somewhat insignificant if you consider that the 150 #/ft load that I used would become about 170 #/ft if we included the beam.

For a steel beam, it's not that simple.... The "load rating" of a beam depends, of course, on it's span.... however, the AISC Steel code also imposes corrections for the type of end connections selected for the beam.

The program functions within AutoCAD®, and uses AutoCAD® to draw beam centre lines or grids. Point loads and/or uniformly distributed loads (UDL's) are then placed onto these centre lines. Pull-down menus containing all SAISC steel sections are used to select required beam type.

Steel I-beam sizing software ... The 6 refers to the depth (6") and the 12.5 refers to the weight of the beam per foot. So, this would be an i-beam with a 3-3/8" flange and 6" depth. This example assumes there are no other point loads and that the overall load is uniformly distributed. ... Steel beam design software. Click here!
