Stratocumulus clouds generally appear as a low, lumpy layer of clouds that is sometimes accompanied by weak intensity precipitation. Stratocumulus vary in color from dark gray to light gray and may appear as rounded masses, rolls, etc., with breaks of clear sky in between.

Stratocumulus clouds are named because they are spread out and puffy. They are often broken into rolls or patches, and form a regular pattern. These are low altitude clouds that are located only 5,000 to 8,000 feet above the Earth' surface.

Whilst marine stratocumulus clouds have been heavily studied in the past, almost no data exists on clouds or air-sea fluxes in the PACS region. NOAA has recently initiated a program of study called EPIC that includes investigations of stratocumulus clouds in the PACS region.

Stratocumulus clouds are divided into two primary varieties: Stratocumulus undulatus (wavy) and Stratocumulus cumuliformis (cumulus-like). Stratocumulus undulatus clouds appear as nearly parallel waves, rolls or separate elongated clouds, without significant vertical development.

When warm, moist air is mixed with drier, cooler air and the mixture is moving beneath warmer, lighter air above, clouds will often form as rolls or waves. Sometimes, especially in summer, there are gaps through which the Sun can shine. This cloud is called stratocumulus, meaning sheets of lumpy cloud.
