Give the boots a good soaking with leather expander (which you can buy from shoe repair shops etc.) round the tight bit - inside and outside the boots. Then immediately put on the socks or bandage, to make the top of your foot bigger than usual, and force the boots on.

No wonder one felt tight - one was size 6, the other was 6.5! The perils of eBay. I've been ... I've bought a fab pair of boots on ebay which are slightly too small - pointed toe. I was going to stuff the toes with newspaper in the hope of stretching them but someone told me it should be wet newspaper. Is that correct?

They needed a small bit of stretching before they fitted 100%, ... Compare the Mirage platform boots at the end. A similar trick is employed in that "off the shelf" pair. If you are having problems with tight boots, why not get lace ups like above? Or add laces to a tight pair to replace a zip fitting which is less flexible.
