Breechclouts and leggings were often red or blue wool strouding. Shirts were often calico with complex patterns or muslin or linen. Unlike their neighbors the Catawba men wore their hair long often pulled back into a ponytail style.

A short time ago my wife was consulting our Chambers English Dictionary (1992), and came by chance across the following entry: stroud, n. a blanket made for trading with American Indians - n. strouding, its material, coarse wool [Probably made at Stroud in Gloucestershire];

Some McKenney-Hall portraits seem to indicate wool or strouding could have been used, from the ways the fabric hangs and folds. The Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, has a buckskin example, and also one made of "chintz.

Strouding was also made ln black and green. There is no written record of green leggings, but some unraveled green wool was used in fingerwoven garters and sashes. It does appear that chiefs were especially partial to the color red in their leggings.
