It is not always clear when we have a case of structural ambiguity. Consider, for example, the elliptical sentence, 'Perot knows a richer man than Trump'. It has two meanings, that Perot knows a man who is richer than Trump and that Perot knows man who is richer than any man Trump knows, and is therefore ambiguous.

These ambiguities will typically give rise to different trees associated with a sentence, and we call them STRUCTURAL AMBIGUITIES. ... The example here just relies on syntactic rules to do with phrases to induce ambiguity. In some cases, categorial ambiguity may also be involved: This sentence could either mean that Pip...

CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles): We propose that many ambiguous prepositional phrase attachments can be resolved on the basis of the relative strength of association of the preposition with verbal and nominal heads, estimated on the basis of distribution in an automatically parsed corpus.

These results support the idea that contextual knowledge is of overriding importance in the resolution of structural ambiguity, both off-line, and on-line. The results support the notion of an interactive parser, in which contextual influences immediately have impact on structural attachment decisions.
