Pyroxene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The pyroxenes are a group of important rock-forming silicate minerals found in many igneous and metamorphic rocks. They share a common structure consisting of single chains of silica tetrahedra and ...

The pyroxene structure consists of single chains of tetrahedra extending along the c axis of the unit cell. There are two types of cation positions, designated M1 and M2. The smaller M1 sites lie between the apices of opposing tetrahedra, and are almost regular octahedra.

structure, chemistry, petrogenesis ... The pyroxene quadrilateral forms part of a larger ternary system (CaSiO3-MgSiO3-FeSiO3), that includes another single chain silicate wollastonite. The Ca-rich clinopyroxenes are separated from the orthopyroxenes, and from the Ca-poor clionpyroxene pigeonite by a solvus (shown in green...

Ca atoms are connected to 8 oxygens in distorted octahedra. Mg atoms are connected to 8 oxygens. Si atoms are connected to 4 oxygens. The pyroxenes have chains of Si tetrahedra oriented parallel to the c ... Pyroxene has good {110} prismatic cleavages that are parallel to the c-axis and are at almost 90° to each other.

Strikingly, the two types of silicate chains in the P2 1 cn structure alternate along the b axis in a tetrahedral layer parallel to (100). Such a mixed arrangement of two differently rotated silicate chains in a tetrahedral layer has not been observed in any other pyroxene structure.
