Endoplasmic reticulum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The endoplasmic reticulum ( ER ) is an eukaryotic organelle that forms an interconnected network of tubules, vesicles, and cisternae within cells. The lacey membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum ...

As you learn more about cells you will discover two types of ER. There are rough ER and smooth ER. They both have the same types of membranes but they have different shapes and rough ER has ribosomes attached. Rough ER looks like sheets of bumpy membranes while smooth ER looks more like tubes.

At upper right, small transitional vesicles can be seen budding from the roughER. These carry proteins destined for processing by the Golgi. As well as connecting to the nuclear envelope, the rough ER is continuous with the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

Explore the structure and function of the eukaryotic endoplasmic reticulum. ... What are their distinguishing characteristics?; There are two regions of the ER that differ in both structure and function. One region is called rough ER because it has ribosomes attached to the cytoplasmic side of the membrane.

Instead ribosomes stud the former phagosomal membrane and L. pneumophila reside directly in the rough ER. Examination of phagosomes of various L. pneumophila mutants suggests that this membrane conversion is a four-stage process used by L. pneumophila to establish itself in the RER and to survive intracellularly.
