So in building a stupa, or contributing in any way towards one, is considered a *good thing* by Buddhists in general. It is a structure that invites (or even invokes) peace. Ruwanweliseya, or the "Great Stupa", above, is regarded as the most important of the stupas at Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Standing at 300 feet, it is the oldest but smallest of the three giant edifices in brick in the world.

A nearly perfect hemispherical dome, the Great Stupa is topped by a triple "parasol" set within a square railing or harmika. A third of the way up from its base, a raised terrace, enclosed by a fence, is meant for ritual circumambulation of the monument.
