Subchorionic hemorrhage is a frequent cause of first and second trimester bleeding and has a grave prognosis. Familiarity with the varied sonographic appearances and meticulous sonographic examination with special attention to the placental margins can be helpful in the diagnosis.

There are some data to suggest that overall subchorionic hematoma confers some risk throughout the pregnancy. While you are probably no more likely to miscarry than anyone else with first trimester bleeding, pregnancies complicated by subchorionic hematoma are at greater risk for preterm labor and placental abruption.
