Subduction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In geology, subduction is the process that takes place at convergent boundaries by which one tectonic plate moves under another tectonic plate, sinking into the Earth's mantle, as the plates converg...

Subduction is the process in which one plate is pushed downward beneath another plate into the underlying mantle when plates move towards each other. The plate that is denser will slide under the thicker, less dense plate.

Sometimes an entire plate can disappear if the plates’ leading edge is being consumed in a subduction trench faster than new crust is being added at the ridge on its trailing edge.

Subduction Zone Studies ... Why Study Subduction Zones? ... Introduction to Volcanic Arc systems highlights the importance of understanding how subduction zones operate. For example, many of the Earth's most active 'Decade Volcanoes' are associated with subduction zones.

Subduction is the process whereby a more dense, lithospheric plate is pushed under a lighter lithospheric plate when they collide. The oceanic plate melts as it pushes toward the interior. Molten rock material, magma, rises to fuel volcanic activity at the surface.

USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, responsible for monitoring, reporting, and researching earthquakes and earthquake hazards ... The subduction zone is the place where two lithospheric plates come together, one riding over the other. Most volcanoes on land occur parallel to and inland from the boundary between the two plates.

How to Build a Model Illustrating Sea-Floor Spreading and Subduction ... This process, called subduction, creates a very deep trough near the line of contact between the oceanic and continental plates. This trough is called an oceanic trench. As an oceanic plate is subducted into the Earth it is subjected to increased...
