I just bought a chemistry kit for the kids that comes with an alcohol burner. The directions say to add denatured alcohol, but all I have is isopropyl. In looking around the web, I find conflicting information on whether it is o.k. to substitute the one for the other.

It is therefore not a good substitute for denatured alcohol. Chemically methanol has 1 carbon, ethanol has 2 carbons and isopopyl alcohol has 3 carbons. Flammability goes down with increasing carbon content because volatility also goes down with increasing carbon content.

It's 100% solvent and should burn great and extract water thoroughly. Denaturant additives (~10% concentration) are often like acetone, which can dissolve many plastics.
