You may substitute parchment rounds if you wish. Waxed paper was also useful when making jelly rolls, buche de noel, and some of those rolled souffles. It has its place in our kitchens. When you need to butter a pan, using waxed paper to smear the butter around is helpful.

I've used foil when I was truly desparate, but I wouldn't advise it. Whatever you do, don't use regular paper or paper bags because they WILL IGNITE. Funny Thanksgiving story behind that one...

Since I saw warnings about using paper (some contain toxins), paper bags and waxed paper (can ignite at 400 degrees; wax and wax vapor are not safe, etc.), I tried non-stick aluminum foil (Reynolds), and it seemed to work quite well.

Paper grocery bags are sometimes recommended as a substitute for parchment paper, but it's not advisable to use them. Grocery bags will ignite at 450 degrees, and that they may have been treated with unsafe chemicals.

You can substitute waxed paper or greaseproof paper for parchment paper on the bottom of cake pans or on your counters for rolling, but not when baking cookies, microwaving, or preparing something en papillote.
