May 8, 2009 -- The Solar Cycle 24 Prediction Panel has reached a consensus decision on the prediction of the next solar cycle (Cycle 24). First, the panel has agreed that solar minimum occurred in December, 2008. This still qualifies as a prediction since the smoothed sunspot number is only valid through September,

Tchijevsky went on to observe that the 1917 Russian Revolution occurred during the height of Sunspot Cycle. Unfortunately, this was one of science’s most costly observations, it earned Tchijevsky almost 30 years in Soviet prisons because his theory challenged “Marxist dialectics”.

Solar variations refer here to changes in the amount of total solar radiation and its spectral distribution. There are periodic components to these variations, the principal one being the 11-year sol...

An example of the sunspot plot your students should come up with appears here. You'll see the labelling of the maximums with "M" and minimums with "m". There is of course a regular pattern of sunspot numbers. Scientists say the sunspot cycle is 11 years long.

The data is the same in both graphs; it is just shown with two different vertical scales. It is obvious from both graphs that sunspot activity is cyclical, with the numbers regularly rising and falling. The tick marks on the horizontal axis are at 11-year intervals, the approximate length of the solar cycle.

In turn, this serves as a good indicator of where the sunspot cycle is headed, but it's not an absolute measure. Hathaway has several graphs showing different prediction methods applied to past sunspot cycles. That is, they used the data from early in a cycle to "predict" what the rest of the cycle would do.

Although it may seem like quackery, there is a well known correlation between weather patterns and drought that accompany the 11-year sunspot cycle. As well, human tension, excitability and a sharp economic recession often occurs right at the peak in solar activity.
