SURF SCOTER; Melanitta perspicillata ... The most abundant wintering Pacific coast scoter, Surf Scoters favor shallow waters in bays, estuaries and river mouths. Even so, some winter inland, and the ducks can be fairly numerous on the Great Lakes. Vagrants regularly appear in Europe.

The adult male Surf Scoter with its black plumage and white patches on the nape and forehead is distinctive. Female plumages of the Surf Scoter are similar to female plumages of the other scoters. It can be told from the Black Scoter by it more sloping forehead, and white face patches.

This is what a surf scoter looks like, oiled. It doesn’t smell good either. This female is waiting in a warm pen till she’s stable enough to wash, probably tomorrow. There were dozens of pet carriers of birds in line to be taken in, weighed, assigned to a warm pen.
