The cohesive forces between liquid molecules are responsible for the phenomenon known as surface tension. The molecules at the surface do not have other like molecules on all sides of them and consequently they cohere more strongly to those directly associated with them on the surface.

Surface Tension and Bubbles ... The surface tension of water provides the necessary wall tension for the formation of bubbles with water. The tendency to minimize that wall tension pulls the bubbles into spherical shapes (LaPlace's law).

Surface tension - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For the work of fiction, see Surface Tension (short story). Surface tension is a property of the surface of a liquid. It is what causes the surface portion of liquid to be attracted to another sur...

Surface tension plays an important role in the way liquids behave. If you fill a glass with water, you will be able to add water above the rim of the glass because of surface tension. ... The paper clip is supported by the surface-tension skin of the water.

Press the buttons below to see surface tension pull two Cheerios together and to see water sticking to the side of the glass as it is poured out. Both are examples of surface tension at work.

An explanation of surface tension, along with some basic experiments and tricks that make use of the phenomenon. ... Surface tension is a phenomenon in which the surface of a liquid, where the liquid is in contact with gas, acts like a thin elastic sheet. This term is typically used only when the liquid surface is in...

A simple laboratory demonstration of surface tension. ... Surface tension is what permits water striders and other insects to walk across the surface of water and what enables a needle to float. Of course, the critical feature here is the amount of force per unit area -- put a needle into water end-on instead sideways and...

surface tension, tendency of liquids to reduce their exposed surface to the smallest possible area. A drop of water, for example, tends to assume the shape of a sphere. The phenomenon is attributed to cohesion, the attractive forces acting between the molecules of the liquid (see adhesion and cohesion).

Surface Tension Of Water; Anita J. Smith Joseph Warren School ; 9239 South Jeffery; Chicago IL 60617 ; (312) 535-6625; Objectives: 1. The students will learn some basic concepts about the surface tension of water. The surface tension of water is caused by the attraction of water molecules to each other, just as a magnet...
