The swash is more powerful than the backwash, so more material is carried up the beach than is pulled back down it. This leads to an increase in beach sediments. If there are not many waves each wave will be able to complete both its swash and backwash without interference from the next wave coming up the beach.

The sinusoidal, or snake like, pattern of a wave is the signature of all waves. The surface of the ocean or a lake that an observer sees is the net result of all the different waves that are traveling through the water at any given moment.

A field investigation on a natural sand beach of the swash process and the interaction of swash with input waves, beach ground water, and beach sand levels was conducted on Santa Rosa Island, Florida. A high-resolution system of capacitance wire probes for field measurement of swash processes was developed.
