The frequency will vary over the course of the year. Avoid watering on a fixed schedule such as every week or every 5 days. A fixed schedule does not necessarily give plants water when they need it. In fact, watering on a fixed schedule may mean plants are over- watered at one time of the year but under-watered at others.

In some cases, plants that are over-watered suffer drought stress symptoms. Over-watering drives oxygen out of the soil, which is needed by plant roots for proper functioning. If there is insufficient oxygen, roots die, just as they do when there is insufficient water.

They should like it better than what they have now ;) When you water your plants, wait till the soil gets DRY down the first few inches. If you still feel moist soil, wait another day and water them. Remember that a plant watered too much is worse than a plant that is not watered enough :);

Remember, plants may show the same symptoms from being over-watered as from being under-watered (e.g., yellow leaves and/or wilting). There is no other way to determine when a plant needs water other than to monitor the soil moisture.
