I've started writing the word QUIET up on the chalkboard and whenever they get overtalkative and pretend they don't hear me ask them nicely to be quiet I erase a letter of the word.

2. Teach a talkative students how to control themselves instead of you trying to control them. Help them make a list of things that need to be done before they engage in the fun of conversation. When talking is an interference ask them to check their lists to see what needs to be done.

You can use an egg timer or wall clock to aid students to become more aware of the duration of their comments. Studies show that without your intervention, your most talkative students will talk more and longer, and your quietest students will talk less and less-- exactly the opposite of what you wanted.
