These are a collection of strategies to help you teach the concept of elapsed time. Unfortunately, with elapsed time on our upcoming state tests, I can't wait to teach it either. Here's what I do; Make sure you have a "teacher clock" that you can move hands on for demo purposes.

Author: Paula TEACHER'S NOTE: YIKES, ELAPSED TIME!!!! Quite the nightmare concept to teach. We do it though... :-) Our grade level invested in the large teaching Judy Instructo clocks. The student ones are not geared, and it made it difficult for some to manipulate, so we bought 20 large geared clocks.

Another teacher and I made this lesson together to teach elapsed time to our groups of second graders. Before the lesson, I wrote the times from The Grouchy Ladybug on a set of 8 1/2 x 11 inch cards. I gave each child a card and asked them to write down the activity that happened at the time on their card.
