Martin McDonagh's The Cripple Of Inishmaan is as funny and sad and exhilarating a new play as I've seen for some time. Director Jerry Zaks has fortunately been able to bring the one member of the London cast who comes closest to being irreplaceable --Ruaidhri (Roa-ree) Conroy as the title character "cripple" Billy.

The Cripple of Inishmaan is familiar territory for Martin McDonagh - the setting is the Aran Islands during the 1930s. Generally the play is a bit less violent that his others, but not much. Cripple Billy is the main character, a young man mocked ceaselessly by the townsfolk for his physical deformities.

The Cripple of Inishmaan, at least as it is staged by Jiri Zizka at the Wilma, is a full-length Irish freak show. There are Billy's two simpleminded foster aunts, one (June Squibb) who has conversations with rocks, the other (Patricia O'Connell), somewhat less simpleminded, who sneaks candies.

'The Cripple Of Inishmaan' ... I'd argue with details, but Martin McDonagh's "The Cripple of Inishmaan" as staged by the rapidly expanding Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre is just what my Joycean alter ego says, a lovelynasty, funnygrim comedy.
