the only emperor is the emperor of ice cream because ice cream is really really great stuff that everyone enjoys but it melts and everything comes to an end. think ozymandius as the original emperor of ice cream or quite a few poems from jeffers deal with the same ideas.

Not that "The Emperor of Ice-Cream" is an unimaginative poem. Though Stevens spoke of its "deliberately commonplace costume" when he chose it as his favorite in 1933, he also said that it seemed to him to contain something of the "essential gaudiness" of poetry.

Wallace Stevens needs to be read in isolation. His poetry makes little sense in conjunction with anyone else's. ... His humor is his least noticed attribute, probably because it is so widespread. Even his titles--"The Revolutionists Stop for Orangeade," "The Emperor of Ice-Cream"--undercut their own pomposity.
