THERMAL STRATIFICATION refers to a temperature layering effect that occurs in water. Stratification is due to differences in water density: warm water is less dense than cool water and therefore tends to float on top of the cooler heavier water.

Thermal stratification refers to the layering that occurs, particularly in the warm months, during which a warmer, less dense layer (the epilimnion) overlies a colder denser layer (the hypolimnion). Thermal stratification is a common occurance in deep northern temperate lakes such as Onondaga Lake.

With this concept in mind, seasonal or thermal stratification within lakes can be explored ; Changes in the temperature profile with depth within a lake system is called thermal stratification. This profile changes from one season to the next and creates a cyclical pattern that is repeated from year to year.

Introduction; Thermal stratification, or layering, occurs in many Minnesota lakes. Whether or not a lake stratifies depends on a number of factors: the shape and depth of the lake, the amount of wind, and the orientation of the lake (lakes that are oriented east-west are more affected than lakes oriented north-south).

A physical based transient mathematical model is developed to simulate initiation and growth of the natural circulation and thermal stratification which occurs inside a cryogenic tank. In this way different cryogenic liquid behavior is analyzed.

The thermal stratification is based on a natural process: Since warm water is lighter than cold water, it will ascend until it reaches a layer of warmer water or the top of the tank. ... The more stabile the thermal stratification, the higher the efficiency of the solar heating system and the comfort for the user by...

As lakes heat up through spring and summer, the warmer, less dense surface waters (epilimnion) ride above the colder, more dense bottom waters (hypolimnion). These two layers will not mix again until fall turnover and very little dissolved material is exchanged ... Spring - Completely Mixed ... Summer - Thermally Stratified...

The normal thermal stratification may be modified if the surface water is of lower salinity. In such cases we can get colder, less saline water above warmer, more saline water.
