Thermohaline circulation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term thermohaline circulation ( THC ) refers to the part of the large-scale ocean circulation that is driven by global density gradients created by surface heat and freshwater fluxes. The adje...

Shutdown of thermohaline circulation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shutdown or slowdown of the thermohaline circulation is a postulated effect of global warming. There is some speculation that global warming could, via a shutdown or slowdown of the thermohaline circ...

It is known as the Global Ocean Conveyor or thermohaline circulation. It affects water at the ocean surface and all the way to the deep ocean. It moves water around the world. ... Thermohaline circulation, also called the Global Ocean Conveyor, moves water between the deep and surface ocean worldwide.

Currents carrying colossal amounts of water transport it around the globe, by what has been named "The Great Ocean Conveyor" (Broecker, 1991). Oceanic thermohaline -- so named because it involves both heat, hence "thermo," and salt, hence haline, for common table salt (halite) -- circulation is what drives the Conveyor.

As opposed to wind-driven currents and tides (which are due to the gravity of moon and sun), the thermohaline circulation (Fig. 1) is that part of the ocean circulation which is driven by density differences. Sea water density depends on temperature and salinity, hence the name thermo-haline.

The ocean thermohaline circulation is often referred to as a global conveyor (Gordon 1986; Broecker and Denton 1989; Broecker 1991; review in Gordon et al. 1992). It is common knowledge that the global ocean thermohaline circulation is strongly controlled by the production of the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW).

The global ocean thermohaline conveyor at present, at the last glacial maximum, and at a subsequent meltwater event (MWE) is simulated using a combination of a global ocean circulation model and a Lagrangian trajectory tracing technique.
