Many, many systems oscillate in this way, from a plucked string to a ringing bell, to radio waves (x is an electric field, say), and lots of other stuff. Even things that don’t move back and forth can oscillate.

I have always loved moving funiture though, I think because it’s a straight contest against the world of things – no human factor. Things exert a constant pressure, they don’t feed off your resistance like people (and strange alien devices in Star Trek) do.

I've been to college before, it's not like I don't know things. The instructor came over and looked at the score and back at ... I was just watching her talk and motioning to things, staring at her mouth twisted into foreign shapes as she cooed entirely unintelligible phrases to me. I just stood there, staring at her mouth.
