Properties describe matter. A block of wood, milk, and air all have properties. All the material on earth is in three states-solid, liquid, and gas. The "state" of the matter refers to the group of matter with the same properties.

Regardless of the type of molecule, matter normally exists as either a solid, a liquid, or a gas. We call this property of matter the state of the matter. The three normal states of matter have unique characteristics which are listed on the slide.

Gases, liquids and solids are all made up of microscopic particles, but the behaviors of these particles differ in the three phases. The following figure illustrates the microscopic differences.

Matter comes in three states that are distinguished by the strength of the bonds holding the molecules of the matter together. The three states of matter are:

Three states of matter are surrounding me, As solid, liquid, and gas, you see, And water can be all three (ice, water, air!); Water can be all three. ... A solid is something that you can touch. It may bounce or scream but it won’t change much. A liquid will run right past your hand, But swish it around in a can.

Matter is everything around you. On Earth, matter is usually found in one of three states, or phases. The three main states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.

If you’ve ever wondered just how the heck water turns to ice when you put it in the freezer, this BrainPOP movie on the three main states of matter is exactly what you’ve been waiting for! Tim and Moby explain what matter is, and introduce you to the tiny atoms and molecules that make it up.

There are five main states of matter. Solids, liquids, gases, plasmas, and Bose-Einstein condensates are all different states of matter. Each of these states is also known as a phase. Elements and compounds can move from one phase to another phase when special physical forces are present.
