The tippecanoe darter is one of our smallest fishes, reaching a length of only 1 1/3 inches. The body and fins of males are basically dusky, with scattered dark spots and vertical banding rearward; the fins in both sexes are marginally pale, but basally spotted in the female.

Overall, darters are small. However, there is considerable variation in maximum length among the species found in Pennsylvania. The Eastern sand darter (2.0 inches) and the Tippecanoe darter (1.8 inches) are the smallest Pennsylvania darters.
